A good number of people are convinced it is a religion. The truth is, though it has some religious background. It is more of a way of life, some sort of philosophy that people live on. Discipline is needed to separate the individual from his bodies desires.

It can be practiced for various reasons. Important in attaining a goal as it enables a person to focus, controlling your body, attaining consciousness and self awareness happens when the body is still and silent, that is when the soul speaks.

The practice divides the human body into three body parts and five sheets. The central part being the spinal and the diaphragm. There are different schools of yoga. The most known is Jainism which aims at knowing the self and taking the soul to a state of complete freedom. It concentrates on how to control your thoughts and feelings.

Buddhism uses the tool of focus and insight to understand one self before trying to comprehend the entire universe. A lot of silence is required during the sessions. Another school is Hinduism which works through freeing the mind from all emotional attachments.
