Dermatology is a branch of medicine that deals in the treatment of hair, skin, nails and any other related diseases that affect human beings. It deals with both aspects of medicine and surgery. A person who has specialized in dermatology is known as a dermatologist and they specifically specialize in treating diseases in the widest sense as well as problems of the hair, skin, scalp and nails.

Dermatology just like other fields of study has its various subfields. Some of these are Immunodermatology, cosmetic dermatology, derma pathology, pediatric dermatology and teledermatology. In any of these fields, dermatology specializes in various parts of a human being and various diseases affecting each part.

Cosmetic dermatologists have been leaders in the dermatology since they aim at improving how a person looks. They train on how to use fillers, Botox and hair removal surgery. They also perform procedures related with cosmetics such as face-lifts and liposuction. They offer medications for the skin to prevent damage from chronic exposure, weather, age and life style.

There are also those who specialize in derma pathology, which involves studying the skin at a microscopic level. They analyse various causes of skin diseases at a cellular level by recognizing their appearances, anatomic distribution and behavior. A dermatologist wanting to specialize in pathology completes one year of dermatology fellowship before proceeding for a pathology class, which takes six months.

Immunodermatology is also another field of dermatology and those specialized in it are known as immunodermatologists. It deals with treatment of immune-mediated diseases, which affect the skin such as lupus, bilious pempighoid, pempighus vulgarism and other skin disorders. Most immunodermatologists may have their own immunopathology labs.

A dermatologist can also specialize in Mohs surgery that deals with excision of skin cancer using a technique known as sparing. This allows the intraoperative assessment of deep and peripheral tumor margins. Trained physicians who are supposed to be comfortable in both pathology and surgery only do processing of the CCPDMA procedure. Most physicians receive training about Mohs surgery during g dermatology residency while others join American society of Mohs surgery or programs administered by American college of mohs surgery.

A physician can also qualify to be a pediatric dermatologist by simply completing dermatology and a pediatric residency program or complete a post fellowship program. In pediatric dermatology, dermatologists deal with treatment of diseases such as hereditary skin disorders, neonates, psoriasis, vitiligo, skin disorders that a child is born with, warts and other difficulties of a pediatric population. Most pediatric dermatologists specialize in diagnosing and treating children, including newborn and infants up to their adolescent stage.

Teledermatology is another field in dermatology that deals with application of telemedicine and e-health. It involves exchange of medical information via various kinds of media. It involves viewing of the skin conditions over a large distance to provide information and second opinion services for experts or use the follow up in treating individuals with chronic skin conditions. Teledermatologist can reduce time wastage by simply sending via e-mail digital images of a lesion from the patient to seek medical advice of a condition from a specialist.
