How Chicago Area Sleep Medicine Center Helps Insomnia Suffers Get Relief

By Allan Bigarda

There are a number of individual conditions categorized as sleep disorders. Many are identified by the inability to fall and remain asleep for the entire night without interruption. There is a Chicago Insomnia Diagnostic facility that assists people in overcoming these disorders.

The first appointment at the clinic entails an evaluation. A physical check-up is conducted and a medical history taken. Physiological reasons must be ruled out as the cause of insomnia. When a full assessment is complete the process of monitoring sleeping patterns can start.

It may be stress related and that would explain why the client clenches his teeth while asleep. Restless leg syndrome is frequently found to be the causative factor. Sleep apnea is a serious disorder. The individual has lapses in breathing for brief periods of time. Often this monitoring discloses the condition for the first time.

Narcolepsy is a disorder in which the brain is unable to regulate the twenty-four hour cycles of darkness and light. The individual will be sleepy during the day and falls asleep suddenly in the middle of dinner or a conversation. This condition is a brain disorder not fully understood by the medical community.

In addition to the excessive sleepiness during the day it is typified by a sudden loss of muscle tone. This loss is called cataplexy. It can be triggered by an unexpected emotional response to something.

The behavior referred to as sleepwalking is mocked in cartoons and involves doing something while asleep and being unaware of it. There is an eating disorder that is related. The person walking around in a semi-conscious state eats large amounts of food. In some cases, non-food items such as cigarette butts and coffee grounds are consumed.

Women are afflicted more frequently than men. To confirm these disorders, a client is kept overnight at the clinic for observation. It is rare, but some individuals have been, reportedly, driving a car while in a subconscious state. In some cases, sleep apnea for example, an appliance worn at night can ensure that the lapses in breathing do not lead to death.
